PROFILE OF NIGEL KIERAN PETZER

H DIP CYBERLAW (cum laude) (RAU)

Nigel Petzer was born in Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape and grew up in Pretoria. Having completed his matric at Christian Brothers College, Nigel studied part time at Unisa whilst doing his articles at Rooth and Wessels. Nigel was admitted as an attorney in January 1991. He spent 19 years at Rooth and Wessels and was the founding director in charge of their cyberlaw department. In July 2004 Nigel resigned from Rooth and Wessels and started his own law firm with his partners, Una du Toit and Lesley Ramulifho.

Nigel has gained valuable experience in all facets of litigation in the High Court and

Magistrates Courts. Nigel represented some of the major banking institutions in numerous matters involving banking law, debt recovery and foreclosures. With the advent of computers, the internet and e-mails, Nigel developed a special interest in cyberlaw and completed a Higher Diploma in Cyberlaw (cum laude) at the Rand Afrikaans University. He has written opinions and published numerous articles in this field of the law. Most recently Nigel has represented a South African banking institution and successfully reclaimed its domain name.

Nigel is a member of the Law Society of the Northern Provinces and Forum Toastmasters. Nigel attends the Annual Banking Law Update and numerous other seminars and workshops each year to remain up to date with the ever-changing field of law and fast moving developments in the cyberlaw field.

Nigel is married and has two sons. He spends whatever time available relaxing with his family, reading, playing squash and running around the block with his two sons riding next to him on their quad bike.
